The overall process of getting dental implants can take anywhere from one day to one year, depending on your oral health in general and where the implant is being placed. But what many people want to learn is how long the actual surgery will take. That also depends on a number of factors, such as how many dental implants you will have placed and whether additional procedures need to be performed.

Basic Dental Implant Surgery

The basic dental implant surgery typically takes about an hour. This includes time for anesthesia and recovery. If you are having multiple implants placed, it will take longer, but not substantially longer. Even with multiple implants being placed, the surgery won’t generally be longer than 3 hours.

Additional Same-Day Procedures

When you need to have additional procedures performed on the same day, the surgery will take longer, sometimes substantially longer.

Tooth extractions don’t necessarily take a long time, especially if they are being performed because of gum disease related bone loss.

Hopefully, gum disease has already been controlled before the placement procedure, but if not, additional time may be taken to clean up bacteria present in the gums and bones.

Bone grafts or augmentation procedures can be potentially time-consuming, especially the type of bone augmentation known as a sinus lift.

With all these procedures included, the procedure may take longer than six hours. If you need a significant amount of work like this for your dental implant procedure, we may recommend that you divide it up into multiple procedures with sufficient spacing between them to allow for recovery. This may take more time overall, but it may be better for you and may ultimately get better results.

How Long Will Your Surgery Take?

An estimate that ranges from one hour to more than six is quite a wide range, but it’s the best we can do until we examine your mouth and can make a definite appraisal of your situation. Then we will be able to give a narrower range and a more accurate estimate for your procedure.
